Production:
For hard tuned turbo cars or cars running massive American style V8s 3" pipework is essential to unleash the full potential of the engine. The physical size of this pipe presents problems when bending it. There are two ways round this, as shown in the pictures.
The first picture shows a Fiat coupe downpipe. All sections were angle cut and welded to ensure the full 3" bore was maintained throughout. This avoids the centre of the bend being crushed by the machine. It may look pretty crude but the gains over the standard part were massive with the turbo spooling up much faster.
With recent supplier developments there is now a much neater way as they produce tight 90 degree bends with an almost perfect 3" bore throughout. These can be seen in the second and third pictures.
